05.12.2023 Gdansk, Poland. Jerzy Borowczak Polish politician and trade union activist. In August 1980, he was a co-organizer of the strike at the Gdansk Shipyard. He is standing in front of the historic gate the Gdansk Shipyard sign. It was here that striking shipyard workers were fired upon by the military in December 1970. On 14 August 1980, a strike began at the Gdansk Shipyard, leading to the signing of an agreement between the government commission and the strike committee there on 31 August and the establishment of the Solidarity Trade Union - a legal trade union organisation independent of the authorities. Disciplinarily dismissed after martial law was imposed, he worked together with Donald Tusk at the High Altitude Services Work Cooperative in Gdansk.
